The Dirt

Seeds, Seeds, Seeds!

Hey there Garden Lovers,

Guess what? Colesville’s selling seeds now! We have started carrying seeds from a great, local company, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange.  They were grown and collected right in Mineral, VA,  just 20 miles away. Our seeds are USDA ORGANIC and since they were grown here in zone 7, they are sure to grow in your yard too.

Here is our list of flower seeds that we have; Bachelor’s Button (polka dot flower), Cosmos, Four o’clocks, Hollyhock, Nasturtium, Tithonia, Zinnia, and Autumn Beauty and Velvet Queen Sunflowers.

Our veggies include: Sweet Peas, Sugar Snap peas, Broccoli, Gold Acre Cabbage, Red Russian Kale, Cherry Belle Radish, Beets, Swiss Chard, Scarlet Nantes Carrots, Dark green Italian Parsley, Eggplant, California Wonder Pepper, Goldenwonder Peppers, Jalapeno Peppers, Big Rainbow Tomato, Cherokee Purple Tomato, Roma Tomato, Yellow Pear Tomato, Old Virginia Tomato, Marketmore Cucumbers, Suyo Long Cucumbers, Summer Squash and Zucchini, Crimson Sweet Watermelon, Looseleaf Lettuce, Wild Garden Lettuce Mix, Spinach, Basil, Chamomile, Cilantro, Dill, Echinacea, Lemon Balm, Peppermint, Oregano, Purslane, Thyme, and Belle Isle.

Creating a Raised Garden Bed (Plan & start now!)

One of our owner’s, Butch Gaddy, thought this article is the best explanation of how to create a raised bed. It was actually found in one of the “state by state” gardening magazines, Wisconsin Gardening. Though we are not in Wisconsin, the basic rules and guidelines that go toward creating a raised garden or bed are the same.

The link below has a copy of the article by Scott Beuerlein…it has great pictures and step by step instructions.
