Most often gardens are designed and planted during warm months when creative juices are flowing and inspiration comes from local nurseries and garden centers displays. There is one important aspect of the garden that is left out because of this. What is it going to look like in winter. Though you may not be outside much in the winter to enjoy your gard

en, you will however gaze upon it frequently from the window waiting for spring and all that sprouts. So why not incorporate plants that peak your interest during those months. Some plants have even more appeal without their foliage, such as the twisted shape of the Harry Lauder Walking Stick (Corylus a. contorta) or the bright stems of Red or Yellow Twig Dogwoods (Cornus sericea) and the Coral Bark Maple (Acer palmatum Sango Kaku). There are also a handful of plants that flower during winter months. Heath and Hellebores have evergreen foliage and are available in a variety of flowering colors. There are many other options to investigate including Witchhazel, Winterberry, conifers & grasses (which most grasses should not be cut back until the middle of March). If your landscape is looking bare this time of year check out a few of these varieties and they will surely draw you outside on a sunny winter day.

It’s that time of year…people are not only enjoying fall color in the landscape, but we are also watching berries emerge right before our eyes…they are coming out in a variety of colors and on varying types of plants.

Fruiting plants are enjoyed throughout winter by both homeowners and animals. No matter the size of the yard incorporate trees, shrubs and perennials into your design that will provide food for the native birds of the area. This idea can add a whole new dimension to any space.

As we all know supporting local wildlife is not only a necessity but it can be a pleasure as well. Birds are exciting to watch, and they also play a key role in controlling the mosquito population. The reasons to attract native birds go far beyond what can be mentioned here. The fact is, not all birds fly south for the winter and they depend on area plants for food and shelter. In turn plants have adapted in many ways to try and attract certain birds, luring them with colorful berries and dense branching for nesting. Perennials, if not dead-headed, are a great food source for wildlife. Once the fruit or seed is digested the bird spreads it through droppings. Both the birds and the plants will have benefited from the relationship, and you will undoubtedly enjoy the bird-watching.

Here are some excellent berrying trees and shrubs that the birds are sure to love: Crab Apple, Beautyberry, Pyracantha, Hawthorne, Amelanchier, Winterberry, Viburnum, Cherry, Holly, Dogwood, Buckeye, Chestnut, Walnut, Echinacea, Cedar, Nandina, Cranberry, Blueberry, Cotoneaster, Honeysuckle, Bayberry, Spicebush, Hypericum, Chokeberry, Summersweet, Witch-Hazel, and Juniper.

Robin Hollies are an excellent barrier tree or tall hedge but they also make a great specimen for the garden. Part of the “Red Holly” group, the new growth is predominantly maroon in color. It produces beautiful dark green leaves and can produce an enormous amount of red berries. It is very similar to the Nellie Stevens when it comes to cold hardiness. The Robin Holly is an excellent substitute for the American Holly if someone is looking to get a smaller tree…it gets 14 feet high and 8 feet wide.

Nancy Ross Hugo had a book signing here last Saturday and we were lucky enough to get her to sign a few extra signed copies to sell here at Colesville. It is an amazing book, full of pictures by Robert Llewellyn. The book and pictures really point out an interesting perspectives and different ways of observing trees in the landscape. It will certainly make a great gift for the nature lover.
